Dromhall Hotel – Heat Pump Installation

Dromhall hotel- Killarney

Mastertherm, in collaboration with BSPM and Codex Energy, conducted a study on an existing building using IES virtual environment software. The purpose of this study was to analyse the results and design an environmentally friendly solution for the hotel building.

Analysis and Design of Heat Pump System

Based on the result analysis, our team has proposed a solution that combines a cascade of split air source units with a high temperature water to water heat pump. This combination offers several advantages for both energy efficiency and guest comfort.

Air Source Heat Pump System

The selected air source heat pump system operates on a weather compensation basis. This means that the system adjusts its performance based on external weather conditions, maximizing both efficiency and comfort for hotel guests. The split air source units provide heating and cooling capabilities throughout the building.

High Temperature Water to Water Heat Pump

In addition to the air source units, a high temperature water to water heat pump has been incorporated into the design. This heat pump is responsible for providing 65˚C water for showers, basins, and kitchen use within the hotel. Furthermore, it serves existing Air Handling Units (AHUs) in the bar and function room area.

Solar PV System

To further enhance energy sustainability, a 60kW solar PV system has been installed. This system harnesses solar energy to generate electricity onsite, reducing dependence on traditional power sources.

Conclusion

The collaborative efforts between Mastertherm, BSPM, and Codex Energy have resulted in an innovative solution for making the hotel building more environmentally friendly. The combination of split air source units with a high temperature water to water heat pump ensures efficient operation throughout various areas of the hotel. Additionally, the inclusion of a solar PV system improves overall cost efficiency and sustainability.

Cost Reduction at Hotel

Key Findings:

  • Before optimization, the hotel was facing high energy costs due to inefficient heating system operations.
  • By implementing various measures, the hotel successfully reduced its heating bills by more than 70%.

Strategies Implemented

  1. Energy-efficient HVAC Systems: The hotel invested in modern, energy-saving HVAC systems that are equipped with advanced temperature control and automation features. These systems allowed for optimized heating based on occupancy levels and outdoor weather conditions, resulting in reduced energy consumption.
  2. Smart Terminal Technology: The adoption of smart terminal technology enabled the hotel and the heat pump system to closely monitor and control temperatures in various areas of the building. This intelligent system adjusted temperatures based on repeated patterns, allowing for more efficient use of energy resources without compromising guest comfort, increasing annual COP of the plant.
  3. Staff Awareness and Training: The hotel conducted training sessions for its staff to raise awareness about energy conservation practices related to heating usage. Employees were educated on minimizing unnecessary heating usage in unoccupied rooms or common areas, encouraging responsible energy consumption throughout the premises. System is lowering heating water temperature on these b
  4. asis in stead of switching zones off completely. This practice leads to much higher SCOP even with use of existing radiators throughout the building.

Conclusion

With a combination of system upgrades, smart space temperature terminals utilization, and staff involvement in promoting energy-conscious behaviour, this hotel has achieved remarkable savings of over 70% on their heating bills.
