Presentation Girls School in Maynooth is part of Ireland’s Pathfinder Programme, which pioneers renewable heating systems in schools. MasterTherm heat pumps now help deliver efficient, low-carbon heating through a smart, hybrid setup.

Building a Model for School Decarbonisation
The Pathfinder Programme explores scalable energy retrofit strategies for schools. It tests innovative technologies, refines best practices, and supports Ireland’s education sector in achieving energy efficiency and carbon reduction goals. MasterTherm has contributed to the programme through technical planning and feasibility studies commissioned by the Department of Education.
Proven Technology Adapted for Irish Conditions
With over 25 years of experience, MasterTherm systems are built to operate in diverse climates. Rather than oversizing for rare extremes, the systems rely on intelligent software that balances the heat pump with auxiliary sources. This approach is particularly suited to Ireland’s variable daily temperatures, prioritising year-round efficiency.
Hybrid Heating with Smart BMS Integration
For Presentation Girls School, MasterTherm and Ipsum Engineering delivered a hybrid solution integrated with the Building Management System (BMS). The system ensures the heat pumps operate as the primary source of energy, while gas boilers serve as a backup — reducing fossil fuel dependence.
High-Efficiency Equipment, Lower Carbon Footprint
The installed setup includes a cascade of three BoxAir 60/90 Inverter P heat pumps for space heating and one BoxAir 45 Inverter P unit for domestic hot water. All heat pumps use the eco-friendly refrigerant R290. This efficient configuration supports the school’s transition to clean energy and demonstrates what’s possible in commercial and educational retrofits.
